In tonight’s presidential debate between Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama, moderator Bob Schieffer asked both candidates “Given the current economic situation, would either of you now favor controlling health care costs over expanding health care coverage?”

Unfortunately neither candidate addresses the root problem of this issue. That is to restore the integrity and dignity of doctors which will ultimately restore the dignity of the overall health care system. They always want to cut the costs, however they do not give any specifics. What ultimately will happen is that the reimbursement to doctors will get lowered. This has been going on for the last 32 years that I have been in the health care field. Politicians need to understand that the more they continue penalizing doctors, the more the costs of health care will escalate. This vicious cycle that has been going on for so long must come to an end. This is the only profession where reimbursement to doctors keeps going down, while the cost of everything else keeps going up. The root problem in the health care system is that doctors must be rewarded for the good work they do. They must be respected and honored as doctors. I do agree with senator Obama that many chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease, that cost a huge amount, can be prevented and that we’ve got to put more money into preventive care. I also agree with senator McCain that we need to involve parents and have more physical fitness and nutrition programs in schools in order to prevent the rise of obesity amongst young Americans.
